C1018 is a general purpose low carbon steel with good case hardening qualities. It has a higher manganese content than certain other low carbon grades, such as 1020. With higher manganese, 1018 is a better steel for carburized parts, since it produces a harder and more uniform case. It also has higher mechanical properties, including Brinell hardness, and better machining characteristics. In its production, special manufacturing controls are used for chemical composition, heating, rolling, and surface preparation. This results in a quality product suitable for applications requiring forging, heat treating, cold drawing, machining, drilling and welding.
1018 cold roll bar conforms to ASTM A108
Since 1018 hot roll is a very good carburizing steel, it is especially suitable for parts requiring high surface hardness with a relatively soft core, such as gears and pinions, worms, ratchets, dogs, oil tool slips, pins, chain pins, liners, studs, anchor pins, special bolts, tie rods, machinery parts, etc
Machinability is rated at 78% of B1112. Average cutting speed 130 ft/min. This grade is easily welded by all welding processes including gas, air, and submerges arc, and the resultant welds and joints are of extremely high quality. Preheat and post-weld heating is generally not necessary.
1018 will respond to any carburizing method and subsequent heat treatments. For a hard case and tough core, the following heat treatment is suggested:
Forging
Heat to 2150°-2250° F
Normalizing
Heat to 1650°-2250°F. Cool in air.
Annealing
Heat to 1550°-1650°F. Cool in furnace.
