6063 is a hardenable aluminum alloy that is designed for extrusions. The as-extruded finish is bright, similar to 1100, relatively free from die lines and pick-up, and is satisfactory for many applications without further work. 6063 is similar to 6061, with the exception of slightly lesser strength. It has excellent corrosion resistance to industrial and marine environments. For further protection, a variety of coatings may be applied successfully. 6063 is best suited for anodizing, including hard coat anodizing. This alloy is readily weldable by all methods common to aluminum, and is easily machined. 6063 is often referred to as architectural aluminum, as 6063 square and rectangular tubing has sharp corners, both inside and outside of the tube, with no radius present.
Note: trace elements of 0.005 are present totaling 0.15% of weight 6063 Square and Rectangular Tube Conforms to ASTM B241, ASTM B429, ASTM B483
The above values are average and may be considered as representative of 6063
6063 square and rectangular tube has a wide variety of applications. Due to its fine finish and strength to weight ratio, it is used extensively for architectural trim, door and window frames, furniture components and trim, safety and deck structures, athletic equipment, frames, racks, trailer trim and beds, conveyors, machine parts, guides, supports, ornamental usage and a wide variety of applications in industrial, construction, automotive, marine, appliance, furniture and agriculture industries
6063 Structurals are generally used in the "as supplied" condition. However, in the event thermal treatments are required, the following is recommended:
HEAT TREATMENT - Solution heat treat at 990°F for adequate time to allow for thorough heating and then water quenched. Precipitation hardening is done at 320°F for 18 hours and air cool, followed by 350°F for 8 hours and air cooled.
ANNEALING - Annealing should be done at 775°F for at 2 to 3 hours at temperature, followed by controlled cooling at 50°F per hour down to 500°F then air cooled.
AGING - The aging precipitation heat treatment is done at 350°F for 8 hours followed by air cooling. This produces the T6 temper.
