IN THE SPOTLIGHT |
This month we're featuring Joe Robinson of RidgeRoller Customs, who uses aluminum from Speedy Metals to build his RidgeRoller Custom disc golf carts. He says: "I have been using Speedy for my all aluminum for 4 years now to help build my disc golf carts. I'm here in Appleton, WI, and the guys at the Appleton store are always helpful and go way out of their way to help me every time! These carts are bad to the bone :) Thank you so much for always having the aluminum I need!!" Want to see more great customer projects? DID YOU KNOW...? |
...that researchers have discovered a type of self-healing metal oxide? Most metals oxidize when exposed to air and water (think rust on iron for example!), which can weaken the metal over time. Scientists note, "Even with a solid protective layer, cracks can form that allow the oxygen to penetrate to the bare metal surface, where it can then penetrate into interfaces between the metal grains that make up a bulk metal material, causing further corrosion that can penetrate deeper and lead to structural failure." However, researchers from MIT discovered that when aluminum oxide is applied in a super-thin layer (2-3 nanometers), it flows like a liquid, filling in any cracks that form, even at room temperature.
