DID YOU KNOW...? ...that researchers are one step closer to the 'Holy Grail' of structural materials? Normally in metals, there's a tradeoff between strength and ductility. According to Easo George, the chair for advanced alloy theory and development at ORNL and UT, defeating that tradeoff has long been a "holy grail of structural materials" which will "enable a new generation of lightweight, strong, damage-tolerant materials." Now, George's research team has designed a custom alloy of iron, nickel, aluminum, and titanium with nanoprecipitates of carbon, zirconium, and boron, and carefully controlled the size and spacing of the precipitates, resulting in a material that had both improved strength, and ductility.
