DID YOU KNOW...? ...that we might one day use metal powders to fuel our cars? You have no doubt seen solid fuels in action - any time you light a match or use a sparkler, you're burning a solid fuel. Powdered metals, like iron, can burn in a way that is smokeless and carbon free. But before you could fuel your car with iron powder, scientists need to understand the exact physics of how metal powders combust, in order to design systems to burn them efficiently. Scientists are therefore doing experiments in microgravity in order to suspend the iron particles and observe how a flame propagates. Learn more about these promising future fuels here.
